NRU reactor at Chalk River is turned off for good today

March 31 signs the final shutdown of the National Research Universal Reactor at Chalk River, Ontario.

NRU played for a long time an important role for the development and success of neutron instrumentation and methods. NRU has been one of the major centres for the development of neutron beam techniques. Bertram Brockhouse received his Nobel prize for the development of neutron spectroscopy techniques with his work at Chalk River. NRU reactor so far produced about 1/3 of world medical isotopes and almost half of the North American supply. The contribution of Chalk River research reactor will remain on the annals of science. Now Registering — 10th ISSE Workshop

Registration for the 10th International Workshop on Sample Environment at Scattering Facilities has begun!

The 10th ISSE workshop will be held in Potsdam and Berlin, Germany, in September. The workshop is held under the patronage of the International Society for Sample Environment and will focus on sample environments at neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation facilities.

We look forward to meeting many people from science, engineering and industry fostering exchange of new ideas, developing new standards and intensifying international cooperations.

The Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering (ACNS) is looking for a software/data analysis engineer.

Nick Hauser, Computing and Electronics leader, says about this position: “To be successful in this role you will be willing to learn from your team mates and science staff about neutron scattering techniques, and be able to make a significant contribution to the operations of this world class facility ”

If you want to join a world class organisation that’s making a difference in the lives of Australians, apply now!

The ISSE logo revealed!

ISSE LogoFollowing a first poll, two logos were selected amongst more than 10. After some refinement performed by our colleagues from Oak Ridge to comply with standards, a second poll were organised to choose between these 2 candidates. After a hot but gentle battle, we are now very glad to present the official logo 😉

How do you interpret the ‘i’ of the logo? ISSE members develop Innovative environments? develop environments for synchrotron (circular) and neutron (reactor or linac) sources? launch environments on beamlines? bring equipment adapted to any collimated beam shapes (from circular to rectangular)?…

The 13th International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation (SRI 2018) will be hosted by the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) from June 10 to 15, 2018. Among the numerous topics which will be discussed, there will be in-situ/operando techniques, high-pressure methods and the combination of IR with X-rays.

The abstract submission deadline is February 15 and the early-bird registration deadline is April 15.
