The Sample Environment Officer works within a team to undertake technical and scientific activities that support the neutron beam experiments at the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering. The facility operates a suite of neutron beam instruments on which a very broad range of scientific experiments are conducted. 

The sample environment team facilitates the manipulation of the physical conditions of experiment samples for majority of these experiments. We offer unique instrumentation, technical advice and assistance and bespoke solutions for sample environments. 

The Sample Environment Officer reports to the Manager, Sample Environment, in the Nuclear Science & Technology and Landmark Infrastructure Division.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the execution of neutron scattering experiments by efficiently preparing, installing, operating and removing sample environment equipment on neutron beam instruments (NBI).
  • Provide technical advice to NBI users and collaborate with stakeholders in the design of experiments and testing a variety of devices, equipment and instruments to enable quality research outputs.
  • Contribute to equipment and technical improvement projects or activities.
  • Provide technical and scientific leadership for the development of new and innovative sample environment methodologies and techniques.
  • Collaborate and exchange information with other sample environment laboratories and groups at international neutron beam facilities.
  • Utilise specialist technical and scientific knowledge and expertise to examine, interpret, check and validate methods and results.

3rd International Training School on Sample Environment at Scattering Facilities

— 28. Oct. – 1. Nov. 2019 —

The workshop will be organized by HZB and held in Berlin. It is a hands on training and will cover topics and techniques applicable to neutron and x-ray instruments.


Proceedings deadline postponed

We have received already 9 papers for the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Sample Environment.  We would be pleased to collect a few more by the end of January.
Your manuscripts  will be published in the Journal of Neutron Research.
Please submit your manuscript as soon as feasible and preferably before January 25th, 2019.

Announcement of the ISSE Plenary Meeting

ISSE Plenary Meeting in Potsdam

The ISSE board invites members to the biennial ISSE plenary meeting.

It will take place on Wednesday 5 September at 9:20 in Potsdam (Germany) during the 10th International Workshop on Sample Environment at Scattering Facilities.

During this plenary meeting, the officers of the ending election period will report about the Society’s work of the past 2 years. The Chair and the Secretary of the Society will be elected with simple majority of the attending Personal Members. The newly appointed Communication Officer and Workshop Coordinator will also be presented.
